Our campus is located in the heart of downtown Chicago, one of the world’s most vibrant cities for business, hospitality, and culinary arts. Students often organize outings to amusement parks, museums, pro sporting events, and theater production. These activities are opportunities to cultivate new friendships, strengthen ties to the community, and build professional networks.
Students also explore, play, and discover outside the classroom with friends from around the globe. Knowledge and experience in a city like Chicago not only mistakes for a well-rounded student, it creates a more desirable career candidate. Graduates are often inspired by these global relationships to use their degrees to impact different communities in different ways, whether introducing a new business strategy, or traveling abroad to use what they’ve learned in exciting, unexpected ways.
Our students represent nearly 60 countries, bringing a global perspective to every classroom. During their Optional Practical Training (OPT)period, international students have the option to stay and work in the United States for an additional 12 months after each degree earned. “I selected Kendall College at NLU, because it is one of the most respected culinary schools in the United States. Also, it is located in downtown Chicago, near Randolph Street’s Restaurant Row, The Art Institute of Chicago, and the Magnificent Mile. I appreciate the tutoring for culinary students. Culinary students can spend hours practicing knife skills or learning how to make different kinds of Mother sauces. The chef instructors at Kendall are really open and willing to help students anytime. It is a great place to start your culinary career!”
Arjun came to Kendall College at NLU with a bachelor’s degree already, along with some professional experience working in bars and restaurants. However, Arjun realized he needed to continue building his culinary skills to fully realize his goal of becoming a professional chef. “I chose Kendall College at NLU because of its curriculum and practical classes. Also, the University has a recognizable brand name, which will help me in my future career [...] I especially wanted to learn in Chicago because of its food culture. People here are always trying new cuisines, which can give me great exposure during my studies. I received a 25% International Student Scholarship (25% of total tuition). The scholarship has been really helpful to me as an international student because you have so many additional expenses when you move out from your country to go to school.”
As far as advice that he’d give other international students at NLU, Arjun encourages them to make the most of their time in college. “This time will not come again, so enjoy it to the fullest, but also manage your time for studies. NLU is a place that can help you make your life.”
Rebeca Narro Perez
From Mexico; BA Culinary Arts
Rebeca Narro Perez利用NLU与墨西哥瓦莱大学（Universidad del Valle de México）的合作办学项目，到我校肯代尔学院（Kendall College）就读，并获得了烹饪艺术学士学位。
Rebeca Narro Perez is one student who took advantage of NLU’s partnership with Universidad del Valle de México to attend Kendall College at NLU to earn her B.A. in Culinary Arts.
Rebeca earned a scholarship to study at Kendall College at NLU, which helped cover her tuition and living expenses, and says she enjoyed the diversity and welcoming feeling in Chicago.“I love the multicultural aspect the city has, and how warm the people seem. It made you feel at home. I used to love riding on bicycles along Lake Michigan, the views were just breathtaking.” At Kendall, Rebeca says her favorite class was Flavor Theory. “It changed the way I perceived the food,” she says. “It gave me a deeper understanding when it comes to combining flavors and aromas to create a great well-balanced dish.”
Rebeca将利用我校提供的校友奖学金（可抵免15%的学费），于今年秋季回到NLU继续攻读MBA学位。We are excited that Rebeca is choosing to use her alumni scholarship - 15% off of tuition - to return this Fall to begin earning her MBA at NLU.
“Kendall was in my favorite city in the world, Chicago! When first contacted the school, everyone was so inviting and friendly, and the school had an amazingly diverse group of students and staff. I had a good feeling and a sense of belonging even before my starting day [...] Also, it came from friends’ recommendations.” “My favorite activity was dining! Chicago is rich with culture and is an amazing place to go out and explore. So much to see, do and eat.” “Aside from the great instructors that had laid down a solid foundation, many showed me how a real chefs carried themselves. It’s not only food knowledge, speed, and precision. It’s so much more than I could describe in words…”
Maher encourages current Kendall students to enjoy the experience as much as they can. “Soak in the experience, enjoy every minute there. Attending Kendall was and will continue to be, one of my favorite experiences that I will cherish for the rest of my life. I really wish I could go back and do it all over again.” Now back in his home country, Maher says that he, and others in the field, are trying to change attitudes toward the culinary arts in Saudi Arabia.
Nathalia is set to graduate with her M.A. in Psychology later this year, and given the great relationships she has built so far at NLU, it’s no surprise that the one word she’d use to describe NLU is “community.” She also sees herself in five years, earning her doctorate degree at NLU.
“I chose NLU because it offered a great curriculum in psychology. After a year of studying here, I admire the experience and dedication of all my instructors, the kindness of all the staff, and the connections that I am building.” She encourages her fellow NLU students to lean on the University’s network of support when they need help: “Keep working hard for your dreams. It is all going to be worth it. Don’t give up, and please seek out the resources at NLU that can help you when you’re experiencing obstacles in your life.”
